How To Hire A Wedding Videographer

Photographer: Elyse Hall Photography

Most couples have never hired Wedding Videographer before, so they are not sure what they are looking for or what questions to ask to make sure that it will be everything they are dreaming it will be. Here is a little guide on how to select the right Wedding Videographer for you as a couple:

STYLE:

The first thing you need to identify with is the style of the videographer. Take a look at their website samples and review their blog. Ask to see films from the venue that you are getting married at, but don’t bypass that videographer if they haven’t filmed at your venue. That is often times a good thing because they see it as a blank canvas and it can stimulate creativity to be able to film at a new location. If you are finding yourself sending who you want to hire samples of other videographers work, then hire the videographer that you are sending samples of. If you are asking to change that videographers style then they aren’t the videographer for you.

EXPERIENCE:

It is really important to look at the experience of the company you are hiring. How many years have they been in business? How many wedding seasons have they gone through? Do they specialize in weddings or all video production? You want to work with a company who specializes in wedding films. Weddings are a very different production than commercial video production because they are live events. You can rewind the first kiss as a couple because your videographer wasn’t ready. We get one chance to get the shot, so live event experience is a must!

VIDEOGRAPHERS:

Who will be filming your wedding? Do they have a staff of videographers that are trained to film weddings or do they just hire freelancers to shoot the weddings booked? Be very aware of this. Freelancers can operate cameras just fine, but they may not be trained in filming weddings. Again weddings are live events and require a specific level of expertise and experience. It is important that your team of videographers is in sync that day and has experience with one another. You don’t want a couple of random hires to film your once in a life time event.

A ONE CAMERA PACKAGE, ITS NEVER A GOOD THING:

The offering of packages with one camera and one videographer is never a good thing. Do not purchase this despite the temptation of the low price. It is very dangerous for your wedding film for so many reasons. When you do this you truly are selling you, and your wedding film short.

  1. What if something happens to the one camera they are filming on? Then what? All filming stops while they figure out a solution?
  2.  What if something happens to the one card they are recording on? If your wedding is filmed with one camera and one data card and the card fails… then what? Your whole day that was filmed is lost and can never be recovered.
  3. So much is missed when filmed by one person because they can’t be in two places at once. Getting ready of the couple, cocktail hour and reception detail coverage, both reactions during the first look, and so much more.
  4. You only get one angle of everything..

SERVICE:

Who will you be working with throughout the process? Are you working with a sales person who just sells you on the service and passes you off? Will you be working with the owner or have access to the owner should the sales person leave? Your wedding film is a very important investment. Who is servicing you and how they are servicing you is of utmost priority.

INVESTMENT:

You truly get what you pay for with wedding videography. There are a lot of low cost providers flooding the marketplace with some very cheap packages. A quality wedding film is definitely something worth investing in. If a company is significantly less than others in the marketplace, there is a reason why. You need to look long and hard at their product and what your experience will be like with them. Quality wedding videography is not cheap and owning a wedding videography company is not cheap. There is a reason the pricing is the way it is for a legitimate company that may cost more. You need to be concerned about the low cost providers, and their ability to still be in business by the time your wedding comes if the price point is so low.

WATCH OUT FOR FLUFF:

You need to look at the meat and potatoes of the collection or package you are purchasing. There are many things that videographers offer to make a collection or package look like you are getting so much, that is truly of no value to you. For example the raw footage; everything that is usable is going to be in your film, trust us, you do not want the raw footage. When you get the raw footage there isn’t a mountain of memories that was missed because if it was good, it would have made it into the film. Almost all of the raw footage that didn’t make the film is generally because it was a practice shot and then also out of focus stuff. There is no value to that, plus are you ever going to really look at hours of footage? What would you do with it? What matters most is what is going to be delivered and these are what you need to be asking for:

  1. How many hours of videography am I getting?
  2. How long is the Feature Film going to be?
  3. Am I going to receive a Wedding Movie Trailer?
  4. How many videographers will be at my wedding?
  5. How many cameras will the videographers be filming with?

DELIVERY:

How the company delivers a finished wedding film is important. Are they delivering on old outdated technology like DVD’s and Blu Ray’s? Those are both dying technologies that in a few years won’t be around. Asking for a DVD is like asking for music on a cassette tape or CD. Everything is going towards streaming, downloadable films, or URL based delivery methods. These are how you should be delivered your film at this point.

Overall we want your wedding videography experience to be all that it should be! Check out our blog and feel free to email us if you’re looking for a wedding we filmed at your venue, to see our style. We would love to capture your special day and we are looking forward to hearing from you!
Happy wedding planning!

My Top Three Vendor Must Haves | Arizona Vendors

Hi there! Hope you’ve been spending the new year with good company and big goals. We’ve missed you over here. We have had many big changes and we’re ready for a new year with consistent blogging, incredible weddings, and loving couples. We are already up to over 50 weddings and still booking for this season! So if you were one of those lucky gals or guys that got engaged over the holidays, don’t hesitate to reach out.

Trust me, I know all about popular wedding dates. I am a recent bride of Serendipity Cinematography and have been married for almost two months now! November 11, 2017 is when I tied the knot and getting vendors booked for this day seemed to be tricky. (I mean we did choose, 11.11.. what were we thinking?) So that is why I am sharing with you today, our top three vendors that were a must have and that we booked first! Are you recently engaged? Get to booking these vendors because they get busy, quick! If you have your eye on a specific vendor, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Want to check out my wedding and vendors at the gorgeous Paseo? Click here!

When my husband and I got engaged, we sat down and prioritized our budget and determined what was most important to us. We put a lot of thought into this. We thought about after the fairy tale day and we determined that the film and photos is what you will have to look back on for the rest of your lives together. Easily our top two choices were a videographer and photographer. These were the two people that would capture our day for us to look back on. We will get to reminiscence about our day with our children, grandchildren, and maybe even great grandchildren one day.

We got a lot of questions from family and friends, asking why a videographer was so important to us? A lot of them would say things like, “I haven’t watched my wedding video since the day we got it” or “It’s not that exciting to watch anyways, why spend the money on it?” Well first off, wedding videos aren’t like they used to be. They are films now, a full on gorgeous production of your day. Good bye to the wedding videos of just a long ceremony, first dance, and bad audio. These are hand crafted films of an overview of your entire day from getting ready with your girl friends, interviews of you and your fiance, to the first time he see’s you in your wedding gown, the ceremony, your first dance, and the party that ends the night!

When deciding we didn’t even think twice about booking a videographer. When you really think about it, if you don’t have a videographer there who is going to capture your personal vows and they way you say them to each other on your wedding day? The interview of your parents and grandparents? The toasts from your very best friends? The emotion and words spoken during your first look? You can never get those words, the emotion, and the sound behind them without a videographer there to capture it.

Now we needed one more vendor. This also came pretty easy to us. I am naturally very OCD and Type A. Having someone that could handle our day with the same vision as us was very important. I kept thinking to myself, do I want to spend the one day of my life marrying my best friend worried about where the florist will place the florals on the arch? How the table seating arrangements will get done? And how my bridal party will make it down the aisle flawlessly? No! I didn’t want to worry about one bit of it.

For us a Day Of Coordinator, was the perfect choice. I have had a lot of experience with weddings by working with Serendipity and planning with Pinterest made it super fun. (I mean how did anyone plan a wedding before it!?) I also purchased an Erin Condren planner to help me pace out when everything needed to be completed. But man oh man, is a Coordinator worth it! Planning a wedding is a ton of work. I give all the props to the Planners out there making these magical weddings happen!

There you have it! My top three vendor must haves. Do you have a top three? Comment below and let me know about them!

Fabulously Elegant Wedding at Pelican Hill

There is no doubt that this wedding was one of the most fabulous, stunning and elegant weddings we have had the pleasure of documenting.

How They Met

Diana and Shigeki met online and their first date was in New York City. They both were very excited to meet, and hit it off right from the beginning! What started off as a sushi dinner, quickly turned into a late-night lounge date and ended with a horse drawn carriage ride through Central Park.

These two love to travel together and turned their courting into an “around the world trip”.  It was on the first part of this trip however that Shigeki knew he must make Diana his. Shigeki proposed in the Maldives which was super romantic. He had a table for dinner set up with a flower canopy and wall, that was set up on the sandy beach looking out onto the sunset.

The Wedding

Diana’s gown was a custom, one of a kind gown that is so spectacular you almost can’t stop looking at it. Believe it or not, this gown was just one of three dresses that she wore that day.  Another detail you can’t stop drooling over is the floral.  It starts with what seemed like millions of petals down the aisle, that lead up to a fabulously decorated rotunda with floral that adorn the drapery. Just as you get over the floral, you can start to take in the ocean backdrop with the rolling golf course of endless green.

Though the wedding was massive in details, one thing we loved was how intimate it felt. You could tell that the guests were all close friends and family of the bride and groom and they all truly supported and were excited for the happy couple.  The vision for the day was to have a fabulously elegant wedding that was in gorgeous setting.

Videographer Phoenix Sarah and Lou

Videographer Phoenix Boho Glam Wedding

Talk about a dreamy beach wedding! It all started when Sarah and Louie met on a beautiful night out in Hollywood, California. They were both spending the night dancing away with friends at the nightclub Lure with no idea how the night would unfold. Little did they know how fitting the name of the club would turn to be. Louie spotted the most beautiful girl he had ever seen across the dance floor and there was an instant magnetism between them.

They spent the rest of the night dancing and talking, laughing and flirting. As the amazing night came to a close, Sarah got into a cab with a friend. As she looked back, she saw Louie waving her off as the car drove away. Louie went home and immediately knew “This one is trouble”.

Louie and Sarah went on an official first date a couple days later. The rest is pretty much a fairytale.

What usually is only seen on a movie screen, happened in real life for Sarah and Louie. This adventure loving couple was on a European backpack excursion and they found themselves in Rome.

It was a beautiful night as the sun began to set over the ancient city. They walked through the cobblestone streets, as music played and fellow patrons were dining out on patios. They ended up on the Ponte Umberto bridge. The sun had set, leaving a bright blue glow in the sky, reflecting off the water. Louie dropped to a knee, right there on the bridge, and asked Sarah to marry him!

Every moment of this wedding was perfectly planned from the having vintage lounge vignettes to the farm house coffee tables and right down to the sequin linens.

O.k Amy and Tim had one of the funnest receptions ever. Anytime the groomsmen lose their shirts and leave their tux vests on you know that it is good times… This crowd sure knew how to party. But we knew that already with shooting Amy’s sisters wedding down in Rocky Point a few years back. It was a great night celebrating a great couple!! Congratulations to Amy and Tim. We know you are going to have an amazing life together!

Mike and Dana wed at the Pasadena California at the Pasadena Museum of California Art. You are going to love this couples story of their first kiss. They got off to a rocky start but Mike shaped right up and before you knew it these two found themselves in love. All of their friends kept talking about how he is Boston and she is LA but that together they just work. They are light hearted and fun and a down right super cute couple. I present to you the story of Dana and Mike. Thank you for allowing Serendipity to document your love.

I still remember where I was standing when Lauren called me to tell me the news. She said “Taryn you are NEVER going to believe this but Justin and I have been picked for the show My Fair Wedding with David Tutera!!!!” It is actually a CRAZY story how it all worked out… We have known Justin and Lauren for a few years now. We had the pleasure of shooting Lauren’s sister’s wedding 2 years ago and we have become the official Wedding Cinematographer for Lauren and Andrea’s friends which is AWESOME. So when it came time for Lauren to walk down the aisle she called us and we were of course overjoyed because she and Justin are the COOLEST people ever not to mention smokin’ dancers so we always like shooting them cuttin’ the rug at weddings. They make many cameo’s in our wedding films. Anyhoooooo…. We were just weeks from their wedding and they were having MAJOR issues with their venue. So much so that literally just weeks before their event they walked from the property. Now this was July in Southern California so the chances of getting a new venue weeks before your wedding was slim to none. So Lauren decided to apply for My Fair Wedding on a lark and low and behold her and Justin got picked for the show!!!! If that does not follow the old adage of “everything happens for a reason” I don’t know what does!! Now if you don’t know the premise of the show basically David Tutera comes in and completely blows out your wedding and re-plans it using all of the latest styles and trends. Now if you are unfamiliar with David’s work it is nothing short of spectacular. The designs and vision that he has are unparalleled. All Lauren and Justin told David was that they were having an Asian Fusion wedding and he put together the most magnificent wedding ever! Flash forward a few weeks and we were in Southern California shooting Lauren and Justin’s wedding film next to a TV crew and David Tutera. It was a once and a lifetime experience that we will never forget and hands down the best day of Lauren and Justin’s life. The episode aired last night so we are finally able to show Lauren and Justin’s Wedding Film. Congratulations you two. It has been an absolute pleasure getting to know you over the past couple of years and we are so excited to see what life has in store for you!!

We met Roger and Stephanie through one of our past couples Jane and Kyle at Jane and Kyle’s wedding. Roger was tearing it up on the dance floor at their wedding. Anyone with skills like that is alright in our book so we were just so excited to be a part of documenting his and Stephanie’s special day. They actually got married on “Carmageddon” which ended up not being the HUGE deal that the media made it out to be. They got married at the spectacular Walt Disney Concert Hall. This uber chic and contemporary venue was awesome to shoot at. One of my favorite parts of the night was at the Reception when the DJ called up couples from a list Roger and Stephanie had given him and asked those couples do kiss and whatever that kiss was Roger and Stephanie had to replicate it. Each kiss got even more crazy with choreography and lots of moving parts. It was awesome to see Roger and Stephanie try to duplicate some of these crazy kisses. I have never seen that done before and I thought it was a super fun twist to the generic bang on your glass with a fork and the couple has to kiss that we have all seen 1000 times. I present to you the story of Roger and Stephanie…. Thank you for allowing Serendipity Videography to be a part of documenting your love.

This couple and wedding film are a gem. Jessica and Dave might be the most laid back couple ever. They were so chill on their wedding day. It was all so easy breezy which made them a blast to shoot. They got married at the La Jolla Contemporary Museum that overlooks the breathtaking La Jolla Coast and the views were stunning. A couple of the “deets”, short for details, that I loved about this wedding were their food choices. They did comfort food stations with yummies like Macaroni and Cheese and Sliders which the guests LOVED and instead of a traditional cake this couple did an ice cream and dessert bar. It was all such a big hit because it made the guests feel comfortable and relaxed which is just the personality that Jessica and Dave have. Then to end the evening the guests lined the walkway and Jessica and Dave made their way off into the night under a sea of sparklers. Congratulations to Jessica and Dave! Thank you for allowing Serendipity Videography document your love.
